How to Pose for Stunning Wedding Photos (Even If You’re Camera Shy!)

Writer's picture: Harvey GilesHarvey Giles

Wedding photography isn’t just about capturing moments; it’s about telling your love story in a way that feels natural and beautiful. But if you or your partner feel awkward in front of the camera, you’re not alone! As a wedding photographer based in Sevenoaks, Kent, I specialize in helping couples feel relaxed so their true emotions shine through. Whether you're camera shy or just a little nervous, here are my top tips to ensure you look and feel amazing in your wedding photos.

1. Trust Your Photographer

The first and most important step is to choose a photographer you feel comfortable with. When we connect before your wedding day, I take the time to understand your personalities, what makes you laugh, and any insecurities you might have. The more we click (pun intended!), the more at ease you’ll feel on the day.

2. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

Instead of worrying about how you look, immerse yourself in the moment with your partner. Look into each other’s eyes, whisper something funny, or just enjoy a quiet moment together. Genuine emotions always photograph beautifully and feel much more natural than forced smiles.

3. Move Naturally, Don’t Just Stand Still

Static poses can feel stiff, so I encourage my couples to walk, twirl, sway, and interact. Little movements—like fixing a piece of hair, holding hands, or pulling each other in for a hug—create gorgeous, unposed shots that reflect your personality.

4. The Magic of Guided Posing

I never expect my couples to know how to pose naturally—that’s my job! Instead of awkward instructions, I use prompts like:

  • "Walk hand-in-hand like you’re on a romantic stroll."

  • "Whisper something silly in their ear."

  • "Hold each other close and take a deep breath." These prompts create authentic reactions that look beautiful on camera.

5. Find Your Best Angles

Not everyone loves every angle of themselves, and that’s completely normal. During your engagement session (which I always recommend!), we’ll discover the angles and poses that make you feel most confident. That way, on your wedding day, you’ll already know how to pose in a way that flatters you most.

6. Relax Your Hands & Shoulders

One of the biggest giveaways of nervousness in photos is stiff hands and shoulders. If you feel tense, try:

  • Shaking out your hands between shots.

  • Taking a deep breath and rolling your shoulders back.

  • Holding something—your partner’s hand, your bouquet, or gently touching your dress/suit. These small tweaks can make a huge difference in how natural your poses look.

7. Smile With Your Eyes

A forced smile can feel unnatural, but a genuine expression always shines through. Think about something happy—like your love story, a funny memory, or even your honeymoon plans. The result? A soft, authentic smile that makes you look radiant.

8. Practice Makes Perfect

A pre-wedding or engagement session is a game-changer for camera-shy couples. It helps you get comfortable in front of the lens and gives you confidence in your posing skills. By the time your wedding day arrives, you’ll feel like a pro!

9. Don’t Overthink It—Enjoy the Moment!

Some of the best wedding photos happen in the in-between moments—the bursts of laughter, the emotional glances, the way you hold each other when you forget the camera is there. My job is to capture those genuine emotions, so you don’t need to worry about looking perfect—just focus on feeling the love.

10. Work With a Photographer Who Gets You

If you’re feeling camera shy about your wedding photos, don’t stress! I specialize in helping couples feel completely at ease in front of the camera.

Absolutely! An engagement shoot is a great way to practice, and I can also send you inspiration based on your personal style.

3. What should I do with my hands in wedding photos?
